The lens you are looking at is the first G model. It does not use AFS focusing. And is a real piece of crap. You want an AF-S G Series with VR, or the much newer AF-P Series which is f/4.5 at the short end and only f/ 6.3 at the long end, but It focuses quite rapidly. This new af-p Lens is available in both DX and FX versions.

Nikon has made quite a few 70 to 300 lenses over the past 25 years. It is important to make sure, absolutely sure, of what you are buying.

G first version was AF.. no VR, no AFS motor in lens. The AF Ed was decent. The AFS G came out and it has VR. It is an FX capable lens and has been made for almost 20 years now. The AF-P lenses are i think 4 or 5 in number. In both DX and Fx versions, and with or without VR.

I had the AFS, VR model and liked it very much but ultimately replaced it with a 70-200 f/2.8.
