I don't own any L glass.

Generally yes, L glass is much better. I had a 35/2 and moved to the 35/1.4L and the difference is night and day. Better color reproduction, sharpness, and focus speed.

I don't know off the top of my head. Google would know though. Depends a lot on if you want the 100/2.8L or the non L version.

Canon 100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro

Read the "bad" section...his tests show no significant optical differences between the L and non L. I have the non L, and personally, I can't do handheld macro shots, but still couldn't justify paying twice as much for IS.

Sorry, didn't have anything else to take a "portrait" of. I tried to make the shots like as if it were a person. Don't really use my speedlite, so I'm still figuring out the settings, so exposure may be off on some of the pics. Also, none of the pictures were edited, just converted to JPEG from RAW. All shots were taken at wide open for all lenses.

The 85mm was the quickest overall in autofocusing, followed by the 30mm. The 100mm was the slowest (if I had the focus ring set to the minimum distance, which is 1.02ft). If I moved my camera forward or back a little and re-autofocused, it was quick). It was the quickest for the "face" shots too.

Great!!

But keep in mind, if you really don't plan on doing macro shots, get the 100mm f2 instead. I only suggested the f2.8 because I'm assuming you'll like doing macro shots. Also keep in mind that you'll need a tripod (decent one at the very least) and a speedlight to do macro.
