xti lens to a xs camera?

i have a digital rebel xti with a canon 18-55mm lens. i just got a film rebel xs for a film class i am taking. my problem is that i am having trouble getting the lens to screw onto my film xs. both cameras are EF mounts, and the body caps work on both cameras if i switch them. why does my lens seem to not want to work?

the 18-55 is an EF-S mount lens and only works with the crop sensor digital camera's. You need an EF mount lens for the full frame digital and 35mm bodies.
