You can get away with astonishingly little flash power these days.
Lots of the older guys are still stuck in the days when ASA 25 film was the shiznit, so you need immense amounts of light. These days ISO 400 is usually very usable, and you camera my give you a couple more stops past that depending on what you're shooting. You can use quite gutless lights.
I would try to get one pretty beefy one, and a couple little ones.
You can skip the radio triggers if you go with optical slaves and/or sync cords. It'll save.. a little bit of money. Not much. But sync cords are pretty darn reliable.
