Would a monochrome digital image with a perfectly even distribution of tones from pure black to pure white have a flat histogram?

pretty much... it would appear as a fairly 'high wall' in the histogram... with each line being almost the same hieght... i doubt it would be easy to get all the lines exactly the same tho.

If it is perceptually even, the black and white points are set appropriately and the histogram has a perceptual (logarithmic) scale along the x-axis then yes, it will be about even over most of the range, as Arch says.

    Best,

Is that a challenge to create an awesome image with a flat histogram?
