After doing quite a bit of research, I am going with the Nikon D610. My question is regarding lenses. I am looking for a quality everyday lens. The kit lens that comes with it the D610:
Nikkor 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5 VR
or
Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G
or both.
Ill be honest, I do not know much about lenses and what differentiates the better ones from the cheaper ones. I have gathered that the lower the f stop, the more expensive they are.
I definitely want a fast and good quality lens as my everyday piece with this body, but I also know my budget. I can't spend $1800 on a lens if that helps.
My photography is mostly landscape, with the hopes of getting into cityscape.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Which lens to buy?

All of them!

Then send me the ones you don't like.

I'd go with the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 for landscape :love-struck: You can't beat the 24-70 f2.8 for everyday use. There's also the older 35-70 f2.8D.

"Traver1t" has a good suggestion but I would refine it a bit more
Nikon 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8
Excellent fast prime lenses glass that all used should be well under 1000$ BUT if you are like me (lazy) and dont feel like changing lenses all the time and want to go with zoom lenses then you will have to do with slower lenses.
The D610 kit lens 24-85mm VR is an excellent lens, had it and used it a lot, its only problem it that its a slow lens.
Gives you great bang for the buck
Nikon 70-300mm VR is a good telezoom lens, not good for everyday general use, its sharp up to 200mm and from 200-300mm its good but not as sharp as up to 200mm, used its worth 250$-300$

I narrowed it down between a few (well maybe more than a few)
NikonAF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR $600
NikonAF NIKKOR 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF $670
NikonAF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR $1300
Tamron28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus $500
TamronSP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD $1300
Sigma24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus $900
Sigma24-105mm F/4 DG OS HSM $900

I do want a zoom lens. I don't want to be changing lenses all the time out in the field. I do want a lens that is good in low light as I am definitely wanting to get into night photography. With the D610 now only $1500, I am ok spending $1200-$1300 on a lens if it's that much better than a $600-$900 one.
If you have any suggestions besides those, please let me know. Thanks! I wanna do this right the 1st time!

My D600 came with the kit 24-85. It wasn't long before I upped to the 24-120 with no regrets.

Have D610 with both above lenses. The 70-300 is by far my favorite.

I don't have a 610- I have a Nikon df so I know I'm working with less megapixels to show off imperfections but I picked up a cheep 28-105 3.5-4.5 afd for my "everyday" lens until I can afford something nicer. It was under $200 on keh it's super sharp, a great range of focal lengths and has a 1/2 macro mode that I find quite handy for a walkabout lens. It's not new, its not fancy, but I'm happy with the results from it! (No kit lens to compare it to though, but the reviews on it are solid) anyways cheep enough that if you quickly find what you "need " next you aren't out much.

The Nikon 24-70 F2.8 is an awesome lens with and awesome price tag. It's well worth the money.

On the other hand the older, 28-70 F2.8 is a tank and has about $1000 price tag, it's not Nano Coated like the new stuff but it takes great photos. Both lenses will last a lifetime and would be easy to resell of you need too.

I was about to suggest the same lens. I have it and I'm very satisfied with its performances. It's very light, well built, and not too expensive considering the focal lenght. You will make some amazing landscape shots with it. Then, if budget allows, get the 50mm f/1.8 G for low light stuff. Eventually, you can add more lenses as you need.

Whats the advantage of the 18-35 over something like a 24-70?
