This is one of the first times I've shot anything like this. I get the feeling that the focal length of this shot is too small making my hands look a bit big compared to the container of chills under it. What do you think?

I also tried various combinations of flash but I found natural light looked the most pleasing.

Your hands are uneven, and the wide DOF makes the bg distracting. Try reshooting with a wider aperture, and get a little closer to the subject.

Get closer or zoom in? I have been toiling with the idea about focal lengths too. But the more I look at this photo the more it annoys me. The background clashes with the Chillies. The bucket does not look nearly as large as it is. The lighting is a bit flat and to top it all off dad blended all the chillies an hour after the photo so I don't have the chance to re-shoot

You might be able to put a slight gaussian blur on the background in Photoshop to make the hands and bucket stand out more.
