$1400 budget, need camera+lens for sports

Oh ok. That's unfortunate. Prob better to stick with nikon as you know it best

Just won another sigma 70-200 for $650.00 on eBay in brand new condition.

So I have roughly $750 to spend on a body. Gonna buy a d90 and then save money... Once i have $500 or so saved ill sell the d90 and get a d7k. Or so thats the plan.

Hey, didn't you need a new car too?

At those prices you could pick up a older tokina/tamron/sigma 300mm f2.8 auto focus as well. If you can find one.

I see a bargain D1h for $119 right now on KEH.com
or d2h for $325.

Right... But what part of good low light performance are you guys missing? My d80 would smoke those things in low light and it sucks by today's standards.

Are you really saying you'd take a d1h over a d90 for night time sports?

If you really MUST stick to your $1400 price budget, the D90 and 80-200/2.8D Nikkor is your best bet. Well, really your only bet. I had the pair for a while, and it worked..well..well. The D90 isn't the best at high-ISO, but neither is my D90, and neither will be my D800. All are better than your D80, though. And certainly better than any blasphemy about a D1h, etc.

But, I mean, there was nothing wrong with your Sigma 70-200, at all. I know of a bunch of people who use that for sports. Both night and day. You probably would have been better off keeping that, and upgrading your body to a higher-end, better-ISO body since the lens will do everything the 70-200 Nikkor will do (just not as well sometimes).

D1h blasphemy eh? I'm not saying a new d7000 will be a lesser body, but a pro body, is a pro body with other features he may like as well.

No one had issues with them when they were the top pro body.

That's because they WERE the best available at the time. Now a $300 point and shoot will out-do a d1h in low light.

Alright guys so I got the 70-200, it'll be here this week. Now I'm looking for a body. I could get a d90 but I'm thinking I'm going to save for a couple weeks and get a d300(s) for the faster frame rate, better build quality, and bigger body with more external controls. I've got $750, and I can get a d300s for $900 if I watch closely.

Yeah....

With no lens choice and body features. My only reasoning would be to grab two lens instead of one. A used 300mm f2.8 and a 80-200mm f2.8 zoom.

Once again. I'm shooting at night on a dimly lit track. Gonna need every bit of iso3200, I have been there before and it is DARK.

Ok. I wasn't sure if it was only dim lit situations or a mixture of both. Then definitely scratch the older pro bodies.

Only choice left is:

D90 vs d300. D7k the best choice but more than I'm ready to spend right now.

Based on experience with both the D90 and the D300, get the D300. It has the Multi-CAM 3500DX - 51 point, 15 cross-type points, auto focus modual, while the D90 has the Multi-CAM 1000 - 11 point, 1 cross-type, auto focus modual.
