I guess it depends on who you talk to...all my shooting buddies told me to save my money and use a bounce card instead. I've never tried any of Gary Fong light diffuser/spreaders but I did put an empty alcohol bottle on my 580EX II and liked the results.

I've shot it (on a friend's Nikon D80 w/ SB-600), and I though it was pretty cool. Really solid, soft fill light outdoors at close-ish range, IMO.
