17-55 Nikkor - is it truly what the user reviewers say (they love it) or is it merely a jumped up 18-70 like Hogan says?

Is it worth the $1200 that I'm about to spend?

I think it is a wonderful lens of course this is just from using it a couple of times and not owning it.
