18-55mm With D200?

I shoot with the D200 and really in need of a wide angle lens. I have a 50 and I can't really do much. Is the 18-55mm VR kit lens a good wide angle till I get the funds for a 2.8?

The $185 AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR covers a very useful range of focal lengths. You might also consider the $460 -25MIR Tamron Di-II 17-50mm f/2.8 for its larger aperture.

Can the budget stretch to a used 18-70mm? It is the kit lens that the D200 came with but it's worlds ahead of the 18-55 in terms of quality.

I'd suggest that you save your pennies and buy a tamron 17-50mm f2.8 down the road. They can be had on ebay for around $320.

The older non-vc versions are cheaper and sharper.
