2 photos for C&C

I was out with my friend and we decided to take a few photos outdoors. Any thoughts/criticisms? Also, I'm curious, how would the lighting/shadows across his face be considered? I like how it looks; however, would it technically be considered as being harsh lighting?

C&C per req:

I don't see anything in the faces that I would call a harsh shadow, in face, with the exception of a minor case of racoon eyes the face is well exposed in both shots. The exposure problem i do see with these two shots however is the total loss of detail in most of his shirt. When you're shooting a scene like this with a very wide dynamic range (black to almost white), it's impossible to get it all recorded properly. A camera just can't do that. Your two options would have been to either add light to bring out some detail in his shirt, or get a different colour shirt. I'm curious as to why you chose a landscape (horizontal) orientation rather than a vertical one.

Yeah tirediron's right, a portrait orientation would allow your subject to fill the frame more, drawing the viewer's attention more to him

I like the landscape in the first photo..very Little House on the Prairie-ish

I would have chosen a vertical orientation for the second.

You are probably way better than I, so you can take my comments with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the input!

I did take about half the photos in portrait but for a few of them, namely the first one I loved seeing more of the background/foliage. Although for #2 I now like the portrait version more...
