2 Portraits

Hey everyone I wanted to share 2 portraits. I don't normally do b/w work so any advice, criticism or tips would be very appreciated

this was with canon 7D base and 50mm f1.8 lens

I like them both actually. The only thing that bothers me - they both go out of focus around the subject's mouth. I would rather see their faces in focus. This doesn't bother me as much in the first photo as the man's emotions are well shown.

They look more like an ad for glasses, than portraits IMO.

Mike has a point. I think that 'portraits' should portray the personality and /or the features of the subject. IMHO these would need a bit more depth of field.
Just my opinion/you may have had another idea for these images.

I do like the first one. It doesn't seem much like a portrait, but it is a great photograph, it really seems to tell a story to me.

The second one would be a lot better if it wasn't cropped in so tight and showed a little more of the head and face.

To me a portrait should show the person's eyes, unless there is a specific theme or something and reason not to. If there is in these shots I'm sorry, I just don't see it.

Overall they're not bad shots at all, in fact I do like them both, with a lot of favoritism to the first. Focus and DOF really seem to work for both of these.

I like the first one the best but in the second there is too much blur and it's meshing with the face and it doesn't look good IMO. But I think that they are really good. Just watch where you're blurring and make sure it doesn't cover the subject in the picture.
