20 Myths About Becoming A Professional...

he was talking to me. then good advice for your stove comment then a responce to dustin.

i'd say continue the converstation cloudwalker some good points are being brought up on both sides.

you are right, people do talk, but i doubt it will stop the influx of people trying. kids younger and younger seem to be trying to open up shop and we all know that the younger you are the more you know. im old enough to know im not good enough to start a business. if i was younger id probalby not be smart enough to realise that. look at pyramid schemes. we all know they are crap. but yet they are still around pulling people in left and right because they go well those other 100 guys didnt make money. but i have the skills to do it. and they get sucked right in.

as for the cheaper part. you sound like you have more knowledge on the older film cameras. so if your theory is that we don't print. i would think the fact i can shoot my images from my camera burn a couple hundred photos to a cd for a buck and pass it off to a client would be cheaper over the long run of buying film rolls for everything and having to pass them on (5$ to devellop a roll of 24 or so?). allot of these little offshoot facebook companies were talking about don't use flash or even have a flash. barely have a couple lenses. and because peoples idea of quality has gone downhill in general it seems thanks to cell phone cameras and facebook you don't need a high end camera to get going. people are just buying the base dslr on the market. adding photography to there last name and boom there in business. again, these are the little upstarts that will likely be closed in year or two.

i mean of the probalby 300 friends on my facebook. id say there are roughly 15 or so all doing photography as a side business. probalby more then any other profession.

Let's talk again in 12 months when your camera is just gathering dust.

I'm not trying to stop the influx of idiots. I'm not even interested in trying. Get it? You and your FB friends will never be a threat to my business.

30+ years in fim vs 5 in digital. You are right, I know film better but I'm not so stupid that I can't adapt. And I have. And I don't sell my shots for nothing.

i don't understand your animosity. im not a professional. nor do i claim to be. i dont charge for photos nor do i plan to, this is a hobby for me and nothing more. this post and this discussion has nothing to do with you stopping any idiots from joining in nor does it have anything to do with my facebook friends being a threat to your business. me saying you were more knowledgeble in film wasn't an attack saying you couldn't adapt. it was along the lines of you likely know the pricing for the cameras and film and extras compared to me. it was strictly knowledge of pricing. because i havnt bought quality film cameras at the time i can't compare. im just going on the assumption that with inflation and such the cost of the entry level cameras were close in cost. none of this was an attack on your or saying you should feel threatoned. the point was being made strictly on the article saying there will be more jobs then photographers, and having a diffrent viewpoint on the matter. my view is that if you counted all the wannabe facebook type photographers out there then i doubt there will be more jobs then photographers. and that if you didnt include any of those little non lisceneced type setups then it would be allot more likely that the jobs could outway the photographers.

I do believe the oversaturated photography bubble will burst in a few years. Uncle Sam and the state and local taxing authorities have stumbled upon new revenue sources: Facebook photographers. My friends wife was "inquired upon" last spring. She was offering $25 sessions on her personal FB page. I'd also speculate that the IRS is salivating and eagery awaiting December 26th when all the Rebel Mom's decide they are going to open up shop on Facebook.
