By direction, I mean a purpose behind the photograph. Here is an example, maybe not a great one, but an example none the less.

Ok here is one of mine, a girl sitting on the beach. But that's it. Just a girl sitting.

Here is the same shot with a different perspective. The wider space gives a sense of isolation. There is a foreground. Although she is isolated and there is a lot more space, there is the pier on the right which gives a sense of balance and helps to fill up the empty space without being obtrusive to the main subject. See? May not be an award winning photo, but there is a purpose, direction and thought to the photo instead of just "snapping a girl on the beach"
