I figure it's really a 270mm on my D200...

no it's really a 180mm lens.
 
It will give you the field of view equivalent to a 270mm lens (more or less) on a full-frame camera, but as Braineac indicates above, the focal length doesn't change and the characteristics of the lens don't change.
 
Yes you are correct but it crops to about that on the D200 I believe.
 
If I take a photo with a 180mm lens, print it, then cut up the print with a pair of scissors, it was still taken with a 180mm lens.

You have a 180mm lens. The camera it's used on does not change that.
 
OK, yes it's still a 180. The area captured by the smaller sensor is smaller. The EFFECT is approximately the same as using a 270mm on a full frame camera.
 
Well, technically, no. The DOF would be different using a 270mm on a FF camera.
 
yes, that's obvious. Aside from that...
 
It's just a pointless thing to say/worry about.

That's like saying your go-kart is technically a Ferrari because it has the same power:weight.


Looks like a cool lens.
