50mmF1.8G or 35mmF1.8G nikon lens ?

i recently purchased 50mm f 1.8 af-s G nikon lens for use with my D3100

i used it mostly to take portrait pics and observed that the pics are very long shot and there is more in the photo than the subject ( most of the times 2people )

also i noticed that the lens is minutely out of focus few times

now as i can still return the lens i was thinking may be i should return the 50mm and get 35mm f/1.8G lens to solve the distance problem

also what about the out of focus problem ?

if i go with 35mm what are the possible disadvantages im looking at ?

Alot of the CA can be corrected in software as I have recently discovered, it's a problem but it isn't a true reason for you not to pick up a 35mm 1.8.

I think the best reason to stick with your 50 1.8 is simply because 50mm is a much better working length for portrait photography on a DX camera, you do NOT want to get too close to your subjects when doing portrait shots because it causes facial distortion (Big noses, small ears). A 35mm will be fine for full body shots but you certainly will not be wanting to do head shots with it!

Sounds like you need a longer lens. Are you sure you want a shorter lens?

Sounds like you need a longer lens. Are you sure you want a shorter lens?

no no not longer lens ... i mean this way

if a person is standing at a point i want her full pic (head to toe ) with out moving back and making her smaller in the pic

with 50mm i can get till knee with 35 mm i can get til toe isnt it ?

If you were standing in a static location relative to your subject, Yes you would get more of that subject in the frame with a 35mm than a 50mm. However you can frame a subject within a frame regardless of focal length and the subject will remain the same size provided you change your distance to the subject.

What changes is perspective or the relationship of the background to your subject. With a wide angle lens the subject wil look the same but then the background will become more broad (angle of view) With more of a telephoto lens, you will see less of the background and the background will also appear closer to your subject even though the distance in reality has not changed
