580EX II - question

I have a 30D.

When looking at the 580EX II screen, my understanding is that there should be a kind of rectangular symbol in upper-leftmost position of screen. This symbol indicates flash recognizing an APS-C body ... think manual calls it an "auto-zoom adjustment".

I do not have this symbol on my 580EX II.

Flash seem to "work" - as in something pops. But results not close to what I see from other photographers - always thought it was my lack of skill.

Am I missing something such as a fn I need to "turn on"? Both my 30D and flash still under warranty so probably a good time to send both in?
