Ok so I bought one of these and was wondering if anyone has some good advice or tips on using it. Does it do a good job on its own or should i use manual mode?

If it's anything like the 580EX that I have, then it's more than enough on its own and you shouldn't really need to be using it in manual mode to get the most out of it. The only thing I'd suggest is either to get to off camera cord, but that's not overly long, or much better, get the ST-E2, which will allow you much more off-camera flexibility and the ability to sync multiple flash units should you decide to add either another 580 or 430.
