Well setting up my turn of the century view camera in my family room, I notice a lot of activity on the humming bird feeder next to the window. Just to the fun of it, I set up the tripod and focused on the feeder.

While shooting through a double glazed thermopane window with a backlit subject will never win any awards, close focusing a 165mm lens at 30 inches on a ground glass at f 5.6, does provide a very narrow depth of field. This and setting aperture, shutter speed, and bellows factor on a bird that is landing, drinking and flying away in about two seconds, becomes an "I can do this" challenge. Fortunately the bird was hungry and made multiple trips.

Sometimes the reward is in the doing. This was quite a change from my leisurely paced landscape photos.

That's amazing! Your equipment was definitely not designed with birding shots in mind. ;) The fact that you got this clear image is fantastic!

Great job - I love that you did this! 👏
