A couple shots at the lake

I went out to the lake today despite the micro tornadoes that were around. Here are a couple of shots that I took. With my 60mm, I often overcast my subject. When I get my flash, is there a particular area that I should be holding my flash? Also, some C&C would be great. This is my first/secondish day at attempting macro.

For me there are a few distractions which draw my attention away from your subject. Ie; number 1 branch/stick above spider and number 3 the branch in the middle at the front and background.

As for lighting are you using a diffuser for the flash?

I'm not using a flash at all. I don't even know how. That's why I was asking.
