After watching this : Macro Photography Ideas to shoot in the Kitchen, I decided to break out the ext. tubes this morning. We had a rare morning ( one with more sun than cloud ) and I got a few of our irises that I liked ok. Taken with the Lensbaby Velvet 56 and a 31mm tube.

The Velvet 56 is a nice lens. Have you tried it with a 1.4 or 2x Tc?


I have used the original Lensbaby with a converter, as well as the Lensbaby 2.0/ I have the Composer, but have not used it much.

This is the only Lensbaby I own, and have never used another. I have never used a teleconverter either on any lens. What will it do for the Lensbaby? Will it increase the macro ability? You have my interest now! Thanks!

Well, a 2x converter will turn it into an effective 112mm, and a 1.4 will make about a 70mm effective focal length, both of which will increase image size compared to the bare lens, so in effect, it does increase the macro ability, as well as visually "compressing" the apparent distance, while narrowing the background angle of view, behind the main subject.

A longer macro lens is sometime useful to minimize background distractions...

Thanks Ray. I used the ext. tubes last year quite a bit with insects, but they remain in the camera bag usually unless I read/view something that reminds me of them, lol.

Great set Dean. As already mentioned, the Lensbaby is great for close-up floral work. I love the surface bokeh on the pedals.
