Hello folks, this is my first post with photos here. I'm fairly new to photography, and just bought my first DSLR about two months ago. Since then I have been having a whole lot of fun with it. Here are a few pics I'd like some feedback on, if you would be so kind.

The first one is so dramatic, it reminds me of the Jack the Ripper pub in London. I like certain aspects of it.
In the second one i feel like you've lost too much detail on the arches, maybe some fill light would help.
The third one is really nice as a composition but i feel like the background is rather flat - the foreground certainly pops quite a bit though!

Good stuff, you show willing and potential.

The city doesn't do much for me, to be honest. It's kind of soft, and your cameras white balance seems to be off a little. I liked the black arches in #2, though. Here is a crop that I found interesting:

that crop acts like a funky optical illusion because of the way the arches are lit

Tends to happen when context is removed from a photo. :sexywink:

I love that bridge, did you know it's the only stone arch bridge on the Mississippi?

You might consider shooting from a wider angle (further to the left of the bridge as an example) and trying some wider focal lengths, see what you come up with. There are actually many ways and angles to shoot this bridge. I like your focus on the arches on the first one.

Some of my attempts...

I would shoot with WB on Auto for all the mixed light, and adjust in post processing. Also, underexpose when you shoot just a little bit which would deepen and enrich the colors a little bit. Boosting the contrast in post will help some too, and/or adjusting the black point in a levels tool to darken the image a hint.

So, it looks like you like night photography based on this and your spoon bridge post, me too, here's some tips...

Great. Thank a lot. Now I have to go buy a new lens.

Great shots! Thanks for the advice and words of wisdom folks! Really appreciated! I do like the night photography, but like I've said before, I know just enough to barely be dangerous. I'm learning quite a bit by doing though..... and thats most of the fun ot it.

The first and third are the best. The white balance doesn't bother me in night shots - you have mixed light sources that are at different color temperatures so there really isn't a correct white balance - go with what works for you. Seems like a great spot to return to in different kinds of light.

you're right about the mixed light sources..... it seems that every time a bulb burns out down there they replace it with a type of light that is different than any other.

Also, I do look forward to returning there during different times of day, but the problem is that right after the first snow the close the staircase until the spring. I fear that the first snowfall is right around the corner. I'd better get down there for sunrise tomorrow.

I did a take on the last one. I played with the colors some and I sharpened the background some. I added a slight vignette.

Lemme know if you want me to take it down. :)

Not at all. I'm glad to see your insight on my photo! I enjoy being able to see it through someone else's eyes. The more I see, the more I learn. The more I learn the more fun I have. The more fun I have........ well........ the more fun I have. :D

Thanks!

I'm no photography expert, but I LOVE these! I lived very close to that bridge for 4 years.. I'll have to share some of my snap shots with ya some time.

Thanks for sharing
