What's new

A few pictures (large files!)... critique welcome!

Freckles - Sorry, this shot does nothing for me. You're too far away for the horse to be the focal point, but the surrounding area is too busy and not interesting on its own. The image looks a little underexposed to me. I'd also suggest that the next time you shoot Freckles that you don't have the sun behind the horse, you're missing out on using the sun to emphasis the contours of its body and the sheen of its coat.

Mount Blanca - I like this one. I like the foreground elements, which you've essentially silhouetted. I like the capture of sunset on the snow and clouds (I love sunset shots, so I don't see this as a pink-cast error at all). I also like the use of portrait orientation here, and how you've vertically divided it between the foreground trees, the mountain, and the sky. The suggestions I have for this scene regard the clouds. I would like to see some more bare sky mixed in with the clouds so that what clouds you do have stand out a bit more. I'd also like to see the peak of the mountain, either poking up above the foreground cloud or only having clouds behind/above it. I know clouds don't always cooperate, especially when you're in a time crunch as the sun sets, but if this is really from your back yard keep this in mind and keep shooting this scene. (Just noticed that it looks like there is a wire running across the top - either crop a little off the top or clone this out.)

Puppy - Cute puppy, and I really like the composition. I'd maybe like to see a bit of his left ear, just as you have a bit of his right. I know capturing animals isn't always easy - this is why it's often better to shoot wide and crop, so you don't inadvertently cut things off as they move on you (same goes for shooting young kids). It's a bummer that you missed focus (got his neck and collar rather than his eyes and the rest of his face). You might want to shoot at a smaller aperture to increase your DoF for subjects that might move on you (if you have enough light or are at a high enough ISO setting to still use a shutter speed fast enough to freeze them).

Cat - Again, sorry but it does nothing for me - it might be a nice sentimental snapshot but is not a keeper otherwise. Admittedly your cat was at an awkward angle draped over the baby gate, but it still looks like an awkward angle here plus the background is noticeably tilted. And I think you'll definitely want to play with your white balance on this one.

Here are a few pictures that I just uploaded to Flickr (thanks for the advice on copying them!) I'm just looking for ways to improve my photography without buying a high-end camera. I'm a little broke right now. :(

2) My puppy, Leo. He is a very active pup and to get him to stand still is a chore in itself.
