I had a few minutes at lunch today so I took some test shots to dial in the af fine tuning with the 7200 and Tamron 150-600. These were all taken from about 30 feet at f/8 1/800 ISO 400 and AF Fine tuning set at -4. After going through these I backed it off to -3 and that is where i'll leave it for it's first trip out this weekend. And these were all shot JPEG Fine as Adobe hasn't sent out the Camera Raw update yet. So far I like the changes they have made to this model. I think it is a major improvement, for bird shooters, over the 7100.

Very nice images, Now your tempting me quite a bit with that lens, though for sure the wife will truly kill me if I was to spend another penny this year!

I have not yet done any AF fine tuning but will be looking into this more closely once the weather gets bad again and not out all the time :)
Its really nice to see someone coming from the d7100 finding a big improvement. Before it was released was so many negative comments going around I was almost being put of from spending the extra on it, but I am glad I did as was amazing.

I too am sticking to jpeg though am shooting RAW + Fine just so can compare once Abobe gets the updates out. I have been trying to use the Nikon programs but its so clunky feeling compared to lightroom I just end up getting annoyed that I have no control over the look of the image, so best wait.

This one will show you why af fine tuning is so important

Look at the link in the chain just in front of the robin, notice how sharp it is. And it stays sharp on the wing and tail but as you get just a little further to the head my dof is already gone. THis was shot at -5. from there I went to the -4 that you see in the photos at the start of the thread and then settled at -3. I have focustune for this but that spot on my fence gives me all of the information i need to fine tune quickly.

Wow, pretty darn nice, ISO 11,400 that's awesome.

I also read that ISO performance was worse on the 7200 due to the new sensor. This is @ ISO 11,400 in the rain. I can live with that.

Whoa,whoa,whoa...where's all the noise everybody was predicting?

What have you done with the noise? We need to know--is the noise safe, and unharmed?

We didn't receive a ransom note....

..you have not harmed the noise have you?

Send us a photo with the noise, unharmed and in good focus, so we can SEE it clearly, and the front page of TODAY's New York Times, and we'll get the money together

Nice set! Time to get that bad boy out of the backyard and into some real world shooting. Sunday morning?

You'll get your noise when I get my $12 !!!!!

And Sunday sounds great Mike :icon_thumright:

And a real afro for Astro ;)

And it looks like Derrel released the hounds, this guy is hot on my trail !!!

after reading this thread earlier tonight, I went to dPreview and checked into the Sony sensor or Toshiba sensor hub-bub regarding the D7200, and found no definitive answer as to which company is making it, but there was some good info on how awesome the sensor in the new D5500 is, both in terms of noise and also in terms of how much color richness the sensor retains at the higher ISO values, in the 12,800 range...people are very impressed with the low noise and how much color this newest-generation sensor and processing/image pipeline can maintain at the higher ISO levels, so...this might be one of those "one full stop better than the prior generation" kind of advances, which is really nice if that one stop is the 6,400 or 12.8K range from .NEF.

It's like all those f/4 lenses just got a pay raise and oak leaves!!!

$12?? We don't HAVE that many cans and bottles to take back!!!

DXO Mark rates the d7200 as aps-c champ at 87, giving dynamic range as its best attribute. I'm still doubtful about dxo ratings but for anyone interested that's the rating.

What I'm not doubtful about is how nice those photos above look. I've ordered a d7200.

I'll get some more interesting shots this weekend but I don't think you'll be disappointed with your new 7200 :icon_thumleft:
