I like that people list their gear, because if I'm considering a lens, and I happen to notice a person whose opinions I respect has that gear, I can quietly PM them, without having to start a whole thread about it.

You can also go to the poster's profile page. There is a place there for an equipment list.

That sort of defeats the whole purpose though. I don't usually care what a certain member has, what I care about is to notice that somebody has X piece of gear. Like I couldn't give two craps that Robin has a 5DIII and a 70-200mm F/2.8 L MkII. But if I happen to notice that some random dude has some random Tamron lens I'm looking for, that could be important to me.

The profile user gear list is also somewhat limited in length. Sadly you can't fit all the gear onto it.
