Daughter #2 is never afraid to ask to go to the park to have pictures taken. We went and took her dog Penelope. I think it went well.

Used the 70-200 f/2.8. I tried to keep the ISO around 100, it was very bright out on Saturday.

Really the first time I've tried any portraits. I typically shoot my kids sports so this was a novelty. I didn't use the onboard flash (for these) and I don't have any other flashes.

After getting home we decided that next time she should wear a different colored top, as the dog can't change her color .

I love the genuine expression! Did you do any work in post? They look really flat. Some fill would have been great too

They are a bit underexposed IMO. She (and the dog) should be brighter. Of course increasing the exposure would completely blow out the bright background, but that's usually preferable to an underexposed subject.
Or you could use something (flash or reflector etc.) to add light to your subjects, without having to increase the exposure of the whole image.

Nice shots.. but flash is almost mandatory in those conditions, if you want to keep any sky and to fill shadows...

I shot them in RAW, and did a little bit of adjustment to them. I think I did lower the exposure as the background was pretty blown. I might be able to crop a bit of it out, and leave the brightness.

At least 'in camera' I had the WB nailed correctly. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the tips!

I don't have any reflectors, or flash beyond what's onboard my T3i. Blew all my cash on the lens (70-200 f/2.8 L IS II). Saving for a speedlight.

You've got great models (including the dog), you can have loads of fun working on the technical details and improvising reflectors etc. Try a large sheet of white card.

This is a natural, sweet shot, well composed and a real keeper
No matter the background, shadows are inherently cold-toned and a bit flattening to the subject.
I would warm it up some, crop off a bit, do some local contrast enhancement and increase the saturation.
(and of course sharpen it some)

I think this adds more punch to it.
