Nikon's 50mm 1.8D (cost me $90) provides some pretty stellar bokeh for some seriously cheap coin. That'd be a good "filler" until you can afford something more. I LOVE my 85mm 1.8G. Sharp, reasonably-fast, outstanding bokeh, and built well. Not a professional lens by any means, but it does a great job.

Edit... Oh I see suggestions. I actually have my lenses in my signature. I just dont own the 35 or 16-85 aanymore.

So I sold the lens today. The guy who bought it had a D200... thought he knew what he was doing. I just checked it out in my own time... D200 doesn't have focus fine tune.

I have this feeling of guilt. I was upfront, said that the lens has backfocusing problems and needs a camera with fine tune, etc. Someone contacted me, bought it, and now I know based on what he told me as we made the exchange that he just didn't know what he was doing. Definitely feeling bad, even though this isn't my fault. I'm extremely hopeful that the 10 megapixel sensor will mean the focus issues aren't a big deal... maybe paired with someone who isn't expecting tack sharp images? I don't know. Maybe his camera will function better with it by default. Ugh. Oh well. I hope I don't hear from him again since I want to forget about all of this and I've got a conscience (oddly enough).
edit - Or does the D200 with updated firmware have AF fine tune? I hope so.

I would not worry too much. There's a chance, a good one, that your camera is the cause of the focus issues,not the lens itself.

My only concern with a lens is how sharp it is and the ability to put the crap I don't want to see OOF. I could care less how round the circles are.
I think it's really odd when someone puts up a beautiful photo and the subject isn't even mentioned. Instead the comment is "Wow, look at that beautiful bokeh!"

I'll now be returning to my simplistic world where the grass is green and the sky is still blue.

The 58mm 1.4G is a good example of why people buy a lens based on its out of focus quality (includes transition quality between in focus & out of focus).

If my 35mm 1.8G wasn't defective in the first place I probably would've kept it. It was a combination of inconveniences. I won't be buying it again though due to the bokeh performance.

Well, bokeh is a subject that a lot of people are not really much concerned with. But I want to show you six pictures that show one of the WORST lenses for both foreground and background bokeh rendering: the Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 manual focus lens. This lens design produces utterly crappy bokeh. Take a look at how UGLY the pictures form this lens can be. The Zeiss Planar is in my opinion, one of the WORST 50mm lens designs as far as pleasant bokeh. These photos were all contributed to pixel-peepers.com as samples that show how a lens draws its images. Just so you understand--these are voluntarily-submitted "samples" that people have deliberately selected to allow people to evaluate and use as examples.
