A tree hanging on to the edge

I went for a drive and walk today to try and see or look for images more creatively. I was also hoping to spot an eagle but, that was a fail. The one I did see was fishing out over the lake and there was no chance of capturing any photos worth keeping. As usual, the sun was not out here in the Buffalo area so these are on the flat or dull side but, it's the best I could do.

As always if there is something that you think could help me to improve I'm all ears and would love the critique. If you got nothing then thanks for taking a look and have a great day.

Both images were shot at 1/160ss, ISO 200, f4.

1. I framed this as best I could when taking the photo. The problem is that there is another tree to the immediate right of this one. I tried to step more to the right but then I lost the roots which I was hoping would add a little more to the photo. The only thing I am still sort of considering is to maybe crop out the empty space on the left side. I guess the reason that I haven't done that yet is because then the tree would be right smack in the middle of the frame.

2. I actually like this one. I know there is a lot of open space but, for me it is actually how I enjoy it. I did try to crop it and just felt it took away from the over all image.

For some reason to me they just lack crisp quality. Very poor color tones. I think it would be an interesting shot if you had better composition for the first one..

I'm not sure what to look for in regards to "crisp quality" other than maybe you mean focus?
I agree with you 100% that the color tones are garbage. There was no sun to speak of until I got home today and for the better part of the day it was typical WNY gloom. I don't think that there is much that I could have done to improve the colors.
Do you have anything to add to how I could have composed it better? The only thing that I think I could have done was a landscape shot. However, if I had done that, there would have been a lot of open space to the left of the tree and the tree would have been close to the boarder on the right. If you have ideas of what I could have done additionally to improve feel free to further explain. Thanks for the help.
