About to get a new camera

I am about to get a new dslr (my first actually) are there any tips/tricks I should know of before I start using, and any key subjects I should learn about before I get it?

Skip that and get a Leica M9. j/k

After using both Nikon and Canon cameras I think the thing that sticks out to me is how different cameras allow the user to adjust the settings. They have differences in how they adjust for exposure for example, and this includes exposure compensation with speedlights (and limits for high speed sync etc...). You can check out Adorama's learning center on their website to see some differences in DSLR's. Id also try a camera out at a store. And I mean try it out. Take your own memory card and take photos and adjust in manual, ISO, ex comp, etc...

There are many ways to skin a cat so its not that any DSLR has an inherent design flaw. Ive been happy with the 4 Nikon cameras Ive had including 3 used models. I buy used now because Ive never had a problem with them and can save some $$$ for lenses. I like the used market for Nikon lenses, but I think Canon has some excellent lens options across the board. And beware this can get expensive. :meh:

I already have a camera (canon 50D w/ a 50mm f1.8 and a 17-50mm f2.8-4.5) lined up for around $800

Best tip / trick I know is to download the users manual from the company website..... and read it over and over again (both before and after you get the camera.. with the camera practice what you are reading!). Also pick up some other useful books to read...

Read the user's manual cover-to cover with the camera at hand.

Rinse and Repeat about 4 times, and keep the user's manual handy for ready reference.
