Yeah, a Canon Ae1 (I have that and an A1) is a good starter. Fairly cheap too on Ebay, even the lenses.

the Ae1 and A1 are great cameras
in the UK you can get a lot of vey good cheap canon lenses for those cameras.
The Ae1 with the pentax MEsuper was amoungst the top sellers in the late 70's early 80's
I remember wishing i could afford an A1 at the time

you may be interested in reading these free online tutorials {4 in all} - some are for digital SLR and others for Photography in general, they also have a interactive section so you can see the effect on the photograph of changing apertures/speed etc - may give you a starting point

Since I use film only for portraits, I don't need TOO many exposures. Can use the extra quality and additional push to think and compose that manual format really provides.

A rollei would have been perfect for the "art" and playing in the darkroom for me. After all, how many people including yourself (Matt) end up having one and using it a lot?
