Sorry. I meant stacking multiple ND filters or an ND on a polarizer. You could probably get two linear polarizers and try a kind of adjustable ND filter, but I haven't tried it. Since autofocus usually requires a circular polarizer, and you're right, I don't believe you can stack those, I personally wouldn't bother.
