Practice.
It's two 3/4"x1-1/2"x18" pieces of mahogany that were glued together years ago. I'll probably just put in some coves and beads to get back into the swing of things. Once I'm comfortable with the lathe and the gouges, I'll do a couple pens and tree ornaments. I also have a pizza cutter that needs a handle.

There's something soothing and satisfying about the sound of a gouge or skew on spinning wood, the flow of shavings and the smell of the fresh cut wood.
