angle of field using 105mm telephoto lens

Yes, indeed. I get it now. The negative was 24 mm by 36 mm regardless of focal length. Therefore, the proportion of height to width was .66. That is what it should be in the complete, untouched, original negative. Imagine my surprise when I found out the photo in question has a height to width proportionality of .57. It is too wide!

Most standard print sizes are not a 2:3 aspect ratio.

And one cannot assume the image on the negative was not cropped when printed.

The .57 is close to the 16:9 ratio used on TV's. It's not unusual to make a print that crops some of the original negative.

Keep in mind that when the negative is placed in the enlarger, the enlarger has a lens and only a portion of the negative may be projected on photo paper of whatever size is chosen. That said you can't hardly determine anything about the negative or the lens from a print.

Using a film 35 mm SLR camera, the picture (negative) will be 24 mm by 36 mm regardless of the lens used.

Not always. There are 35mm film cameras that are ½-frame.
There are, but I have never come across a half-frame SLR.
