I am screwing around with settings and learning about my camera, but i can't figure out why the pictures i'm taking are all turning out black.

What could cause this? help me fix.

(Nikon D3000)
Thanks.

Your shutter speed is too slow! There isnt enough lighting getting into the camera for your sensor to record the picture :) Read you manual and it will tell you more.

Sounds like you need to read the manual. Cream already mentioned shutter speed.. but I think she meant to say 'too fast' - that's probably what the problem is. I'd shoot on P (program mode) in the meantime.

You should learn about aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Once you understand how they come together to make an exposure, you'll be more comfortable with manual settings.

Take it out of the Manual (M) shooting mode.

One or more of 3 things is wrong. The shutter speed is to short, the lens aperture is to small, or the ISO is to high.

In M mode the photographer has to adjust all 3 of those according to how much light there is in a scene.

Your camera has a built-in light meter that activates depending on the shooting mode you have selected. The light meter has 3 different modes of operation and is used to set the 3 values mentioned above.

Until you sit down and read the Users Manual you will continue to get nasty surprises.
