Another Noob What to buy thread

Hi all,

Been trolling the site for a little while and could use some advice as to what to buy. I am looking for a good camera to take traveling and off roading. I have a cheap point and shoot and I'm looking for something that can take higher quality photos. Some "action shots" (most off roading takes place at relatively slow speed). I also travel twice a year (this will hopefully be the camera I take with me to Costa Rica (so I'm looking to capture some good shots in the rain forest this winter) so I don't want it to weight a ton, but have no problem carrying some lenses and a light body. I'm going to say the starting budget for the camera (and maybe a quality first lens) will be somewhere between $1k and $1200. I have started some research, and read the beginners guide to buying a camera, and really looking for some good quality bodies and lenses to go look at.

As a canon fan - I'd say check out used 7D's.

It's not necessarily fanatacism.. It's I just know canon since I use it.. I loosely know about nikon, but not enough to make an educated suggestion.

that's exactly why I typically only recommend Nikon stuff.
in the end, the buyer should do the research into any brands they are considering, and look at each one in person.

Yeah.. or do what I did.. get the same brand your parents had 10 years ago so you can borrow your dads lenses.. haha.

Now that I've been an adult for 10 years, I have my own canon lenses. Switching or considering switching would just be too pricey now.

There are loads of options, I would suggest you look into a well cared for 1d mark II and a secondhand 70-200L f4 lens. Will will probably need something a bit wider in the 24/28-70 bracket also but this camera is designed for speed and will be ok when taken off road.

Edit- sorry missed the bit about light body, I suggest you also have a look at the pentax k5, it can be bought with weather sealed lenses in a double kit 18-55mm and 55-200 weather sealed lenses for approx the money you are talking
