Yes, I understand that. But when I was in manual mode every time I changed the shutter other stuff would change too. I'm not looking at my camera right now but if I remember correctly I think it was the aperture? Also, I seem to remember having troubles adjusting the exposure level when in manual.

If your ISO is on auto then your shutter speed is probably changing when you change the aperture. Auto ISO jumps all over the place so if you see your shutter speed going up then your ISO has probably just jumped up as well. Take it off auto ISO and leave it around 200-400. Only raise it if you can't get a fast enough shutter speed for a handheld shot

thank you so much! I bet this is what happened. :)

You can not adjust exposure comp in manual mode like when you are in Av or S mode. You adjust exposure in manual by adjusting other settings, if your image is underexposed, YOU change something to bring the exposure UP.

I think you should learn the very basic exposure triangle before going further.

I shot this in av mode where you cannot adjust shutterspeed.
This is because Av mode is aperture priority. This means you can adjust the aperture but shutter speed is adjusted automatically for correct exposure. In shutter priority mode (marked with "S" or "Tv" on most cameras) you can change the shutter speed but the aperture is adjusted automatically. In manual mode, you can change both.

What camera?

yes this makes sense to me now. I am doing my best to learn the basics and reading different articles and what not. I am a very visual learner though and seem to learn better hands on. I do plan on taking a class at our local arts center though after the new year. Until then I'm trying my best!
