Any advice on taking portraits

I have a class project but everything turns out snap shotty. Any advice on taking portraits would be greatly appreciated.

Lighting is good, facial expressions are important, watch the background, and have FUN!

Try thinking about "making" a portrait, rather than "taking" one. If you follow that advice, you'll realize that there are a number of things that you, the photographer, are in total control of. YOU need to decide where to shoot, and where in that space to position your subject,and where to position your camera. I am not kidding you about this. THis is really serious advice.
