I think the key is any job is going to have trade offs...

The pros of a national geographic job is you get to go places most photogs only dream of going

The cons are that means lots of time away from your family -- and it may mean inhospitable environments (and apparently being shagged by rare parrots)
 
It's probably worth noting that National Geographic (like most major magazines) employs very few staff photographers-- almost all of their images are made by people hired for that specific job. So, like most photographic jobs, it's a matter of being in the right place with the right skill set at the right time.

Yes but how do you get national geographic to say "we need you to fly to <<insert exotic location>> and do a shoot for our cover story"
