Neither the D700, D300s, OR D90 are made in the USA. So, why the USA still shows them as not discontinued is beyond me. But, since Nikon's headquarters is in Japan, it makes sense to trust the Japan-based website.

I believe that the high end cameras are made in Japan and the production has stopped to adhere to the battery issue. There are probably some in the supply channles and they want to be able to sell them hence no notice re discontinuing in US.

Yes, but the channel still has thousands and thousands of D90 bodies available. Nikon's web site cannot list the D90's price-point replacement until said camera actually HITS THE MARKET. What you can call camera-factory flooding hit Nikon's Thailand facility, and put the plants where the consumer bodies are made six feet under water, and the plants had to be entirely re-established; Nikon just announced, formally, that they were getting plants back on-line.

In early March of 2011,in Japan, the entire supply chain, the electricity grid, and the factories in Sendai, Japan, where the Nikon "pro-type" stuff is made, were basically wiped out by the worst quake in Japan in 1200 years...10 Unbelievable Japan Tsunami/Earthquake Videos | Smosh

Yes, Nikon did officially discontinue the D90; reports I have head have indicated it is NOT being made any more. The same thing happened with the Nikon D40--even after it has been replaced by the D3000, the D40 was still on Nikon's website for month and months. Why? At one time, the D40 was Nikon's best-selling SLR model of ALL-time...ALL-time!! Then it got dethroned by the D90. With a little bit of looking around, brand new D40 and D90 cameras can be found. People still need and want authoritative, accurate, reliable information on the D90, and Nikon's own web sites around the world are great sources for that type of information. Nikon also cannot afford to back-stab its entire dealer network by pulling the D90 listing off the web site; Nikon's customers are its DEALERS...they are the folks who buy truckloads of camera gear from Nikon....then WE buy from THOSE people...

Just an update: on January 25, 2012, two days before this post was made, the Nikon D300s and D700 were listed as DISCONTINUED on the Nikon, Japan web sites...according to Thom Hogan's website, Thom Hogan's Nikon Field Guide and Nikon Flash Guide

"Discontinued in Japan[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Jan 25 (news)--New regulations in Japan, along with the end of life cycle itself, have prompted Nikon to stop selling the D300s and D700 there, and these models have been moved to the Discontinued camera list on the Nikon Japan sites.[/FONT]

I'm glad you were the one to say it. I didn't notice Thom Hagen had said the same thing, but NR reported that as well, like I said earlier.

I think Nikon will be releasing the new line of coolpix cams on the 1st, and the D800 on the 7th. There are "rumored" press events on both of those days. I can't see them announcing the D400 on the same day as the D800. So, I expect that to be a bit later, even though they were discontinued at the same time. It's going to be quite a spectacle when it is announced, though. I, for one, am super stoked to see it, and read about it, and experience it. I've even started preparing my lens lineup as seen in my other thread (yes, all on a rumor. But, everything points to it being true. And, if by some SLIGHT chance that it's not, the lenses will still be good when the camera is announced).

I tell ya' the doggone earthquake of 8.6, then the tsunami that literally wiped out the Sendai, Japan plant (the professional-gear production facility), and then resulting nuclear reactor meltdowns, and the rolling blackouts in Japan due to indadequate electricity production to keep factories open even eight hours in a row,and then the HORRIBLE loss of highway, shipping and receiving, and longshore docks and supply-loading stuff at the shipyards...yeesh... and THEN the flooding in the Thailand plant--the natural disasters, the total COLLAPSE of the shipping/receiving/materials delivery chain in Japan, oh....

2011 has been a horrible year for Nikon's production facilities, as well as for the ***people*** who worked in the Sendai, Japan plant. Hogan wrote a column about a month ago, talking about how he expects the camera industry to announce many more things this year than in a normal year. Canon's mirrorless camera is supposed to be announced soon...it's quite late to the table...

I'm interested to see what a D800 might have lurking inside it...

Given Japanese yen is almost at all time high, it is a no brainer that D800 or whatever the new model is will be priced at least $3000.
