Are grey-cards all the same ?

I don't think so at all. In fact quite the opposite. I don't need to use a grey card (or anything else in the studio) because I know that my lights are exactly 5550K - they're 5550K at the lowest power setting and 5550K at the highest. Out doors, or in uncontrolled environments, I will always use a colour target, simply because I want to record the scene a certain way.


Agreed. But I don't believe I said, nor did I intend to imply, the studio photographer with knowledge sufficient to understand Kelvin temperature values would be using a grey card.

Merely that such a photographer would already possess "decent reference material" to deal with the situation.


And that most hobbyist photographers lack total control over lighting outdoors and must rely on other means.
