I put in the thing for my avatar and a x is coming up instead of the picture does anyone know why :?

You'll have to clarify a little. Did you try to load from a website or upload onto the forum?

yeah I tried to upload from a site

The only thing I would think is that it's either:

The av you're trying to load is not a .gif, or
in the link, you left off the extension.

If this doesn't help, send one of the moderators a PM and get them to tell ya how.

Are you linking from a site that allows image linking?

how do you know if they allow image linking or not

It depends on what site you are using. There is a list on the top of the picture gallery strings that tells what sites are good. Most internet providers give you a home page that you can put them on also.
