It's not cool to use as an avatar, an image you don't own the copyright to, unless you have writen permission from the copyright owner to do so.

I have always used my own photos for avatars (my current one is a shot I took of my camera's shadow on the wall), but I can see times when it would probably be perfectly fine to use something else...

I wonder who's avatar prompted this thread?

There are quite a few on TPF that are obviously not an original photo that was taken by the user in question.

Off the top of my head - this is the first one I can think of:

Please note that I am not intending to call kundalini out - his use of that image is perfectly fine to me, it's just the first one I could think of. And I do realize that it's entirely possible that he drew that himself.

Just for the sake of argument, if I took a very well know image, such as Felix there, and drew my own copy - what would that be, copyright-wise? A derivative work?

So, let me ask this.....who is responsible or liable if someone on this site uses an av that is copyright protected? The member or the the owner of the site? :gah:

Copyright is germain to photography.
