Batman Question

In The Dark Knight, why did they need to pretend that Gordon was dead? It seemed to serve no purpose other than the "surprise, I'm not dead!" bit.

What am I missing?

It's been a while since I watched it last, but I've been planning to do that again soon anyways (I love that movie!). Once I do that I'll come back and see if I can add any clarity for ya. I honestly can't remember off the top of my head though.
