Battery in the cold

Is there anyway to keep your battery charged in the cold while stalking around or should I just buy another one.

Cold batteries store less energy than warm batteries... It's just a fact of life that if you shoot in the cold, you'll get less shots then you would shooting in the warmth from your batteries.

You can try to fix this by : keeping your batteries warm somehow, buying more batteries, etc.

Keep the batteries in your pocket close to your body.

If you only have one, well you'll just have to deal with what you get.

It might have bad effect olso on very old cameras. Once I went out with Russian Zenit camera, about 25-30 years old manual. I guess that camera wasn't serviced at all. Temperature was about -15deg. of Celsia. Problem was that the shutter operated as B on any setting. But I don't think this may happen on new camera with electronic shutter.

If I were planning on being in the cold for longer than an hour or so shooting, I'd definitely have a fully charged spare battery in my shirt pocket or someplace warm and dry. I'd then swap batteries every 30-60 minutes or so. That way, the partially drained battery can be warmed up, thereby increasing the charge in it a bit, before putting it back into the camera.

It really depends on the battery how well it will last in the cold.

I had several cheap off-brand batteries die irreversibly after just two nights in the cold outside (around freezing point).

My Canon batteries for the 5D do reasonably well below zero, and temperature effects appear reversible (warm them up close to you body, put back into the camera ... and all is well again).

My original Canon batteries for the 5D II do much better than those for te 5D. Tested being outdoors at -30 to -40 degC for severral days and nights.

As stated by others, keep the warm and close to your body,bring spares ...

This is always a good idea regardless of the weather and is also not limited to camera batteries.
