beginer camera help please

Hello, I've decided I wanted to pursue a career as a photographer, I understand my basics but its come time for me to buy my brand new camera. Can any one tell me a good beginner camera for around 400 or 600 dollars? I also need to know what my first lens should be. Thank you very much

Hello, I'm very new here too. I thought I'd do my best to help where I can. I am not interested in a career as a photographer, so I can't help there.

In that price range I ended up buying the Nikon d3200. I was also strongly considering the d5100. If it's for a career you may be interested in putting more into buying your camera up front (for you to decide, of course).

So far I'm happy with my d3200, but I am very new. I would say that for me the things I wish it did are bracketing / hdr. I am happy with my camera so far, but if I decide to get a 2nd camera I want it to do those things.

The d5100 is more often suggested here and can be found as a refurb to save a little money.

For a professional type camera you may want a higher level of camera that has some different functions and abilities (including the sort of lenses used and/or type of sensor).

As far as your first lens, I would say you'll decide that by what you are going to start off taking photos of. So far my favorite is my AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G, in my camera it's more like a 52mm.

Find a used D90 and 50mm 1.8D. That will open up much more growth than the 5100 or 3200, mainly in body focus motor (your lens selection is now unlimited.) and CLS (off camera flash). Also, the transition from consumer to pro will not be a profound.

D300's have really come down in the second hand market, maybe expand your budget and grab one.

Spend ~$300 on the body, then invest in good glass. A good 50mm is a good start.



You'll know when you're ready to upgrade the body, by that time you'll have a better idea of what you'll need/want.
