Well yeah, but how does that make the light softer?

reduces and softens shadows... try it for yourself. Place one of your toys a foot from a wall... shoot it with modifier close at a 45 degree angle to focal plane (just out of the camera frame)... and then back the modifier up 10 ft, adjust flash to get similar exposures.. shoot again. Compare the shadows on the wall...
