I want to get into photography for extreme sports, mostly BMX. I'm looking at buying a new DSLR camera. However, I have a budget of about $700. I need a camera that will take decent quality video as well for secondary angles in filming. I've been looking at the canon rebel t1i. Any other suggestions?

I like the T1i a lot for that price range. Probably one of the best in that price range if you are buying brand new. Its a very nice camera, especially for $649.

Nikon D3100 ... nuff said! Brand new out of the oven with the latest specs, plus full hd video. For around 650 too.

nikon d3100. go to store, handle both the canon and nikon models of similar price and get a feel for the ergonomics of them. I prefer nikons build and button layouts. But you might prefer something different.

i just got the canon t2i for $715 at adorama..its refurbished but pretty good price and so far so good. =)

I have the D3100. I have a love hate relationship with it haha! However I def. recommend going to the store & trying both canon & nikon. I went from a canon to nikon & I prefer the feeling of the nikon in my hands.

I'm pretty stoked on my Nikon D3000. It doesn't have video but you can get a package through Ritz Camera with the 18-55 and 55-200mm lenses for about $600, if they still have them. Nikon discontinued the D3000 because the 3100 is so dope.

Thanks for the input everyone. I also want to get a decent fisheye. I'm not looking to spend $600 on the canon 15mm. So what should I be looking at in terms of a cheaper, somewhat quality fisheye?

You can get a factory refurbished d200 and lens for about that price. It is a much better camera than the s3100 or t1i too.

Canon 500D seems to be a good deal to start with.. However I was starting my photography hobby with Canon 450D.

Thanks ;)

Don't rule out other brands as well. If you're interested,

Sony has an a33 which is crazy cool...it can autofocus while shooting a lot faster than a Canon or Nikon, has a microphone jack so you can isolate audo, and has a 7fps burst rate for when you aren't filming video.

Or Pentax has a k-x which is a lot less money than a D5000 but uses the same image sensor and takes some of the best-quality photos on the market for the price range. Plus you could buy that 50-200 telephoto lens with the money you saved on the body.
