I currently have an 18-105 and 50mm 1.8 for my D3100 and was wondering if I should consider getting a 16-85. What would it offer and how would it compare to my two lenses in terms of sharpness and everyday use? Is the 16 any good for wide-angle shots or would a Sigma or Tokina still be needed for good landscape photography?

Thanks!

For everyday use I personally just use my 18-55 kit lens that came with my D3100.

batmura, the 16mm vs 18mm difference is not "huge", but, it is noticeable. I have lenses ranging from 10mm-300mm. I've done lots of test shots to see the difference between 16 and 18. I had the 18-200 nikkor for a while but gladly traded that one in for the 16-85mm. the 16-85 is a perfect walk around lens for vacations or hikes. it has the 16mm for wide shots and the 85mm is adequate for getting close shots.

sharpness....the 16-85mm is sharper than the 18-200mm. the 18-105mm does get a bad rap from nikon shooters as not being as sharp as other zoom lenses. but, the 16-85mm is pretty sharp

a lot of people say that the 16-85 is the best DX mid zoom lenses you can get from nikon. put it this way, I would rather have the 16-85mm and 70-300mm VR than the 18-200mm/18-300mm.

as for the sigma/tamron wide angle lenses, I own the sigma 10-20mm and have been very happy with it. I do believe the 16-85 is wide enough. but having the 10mm is awesome. do some research on the sigma 10-20mm. I paid 300 for one.

do you have a budget?? that would help some.

I have the 16-85 on my D7100,much better than the 18-105 I just sold.I think that the extra reach of 16mm over 18mm gives a wider better suited for most landscape shots.

I've have used the 18-55, 18-105, and 16-85 quite a bit. I like the 16-85 the best because the build quality is much better and it is sharper across the zoom range than the other 2. Don't expect to see a huge difference because the 18-55 and 18-105 are not all that bad. The difference is subtle but real.

I have the 16-85, and just took 800 pictures with it on vacation. IMO it is ten times the quality of the 2 kit lens that I sold to get this, Outside it is wide and sharp.Inside you be the judge I'll post 2 pictures
