best night time settings?

hey guys im new to this and have a d40. I am going to take some night shots tonight of some cars and people. What are the best setting for that? ANy help is appreciated

That's not a lot of information. Will they be moving, are you going for motion blur, do you have some off camera flash units?

Night time, street lights, and any camera even expensive ones don't mix unless you add some creative flashes to it.
